The U. S. Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday cleared the first nonprescription drug for smoking cessation to the United States pharmacy benefit manager. Prescriptions are required for products for which a prescription has been accepted by the pharmacy benefit manager.
The FDA approved Zyban, an antidepressant for use in adults who smoke, according to its label. The new drug is an off-label use of the drug for smoking cessation purposes.
Zyban, available for $4.99, is an alternative to the drug for the treatment of depression. It also helps patients quit smoking with nicotine replacement therapy.
The drug was approved for use in the United States at an estimated cost of $5.9 million.
"It's been very effective at helping patients quit smoking, even when they are not smoking," said Dr. Robert L. Steinkut, the lead researcher in clinical research at the University of Michigan, in an interview with PRNewswire. The FDA said it is also reviewing the company's marketing efforts and the potential for a change in its marketing practices.
It is not clear when Zyban will become available in the United States and whether the FDA is considering it for that purpose.

Steven Nissen, head of the Division of Pharmacology and Molecular Pharmacology at the University of Minnesota, said that he was concerned about the safety of Zyban.
